In a new study published in
BMJ Open, researchers testing the effect of cervical manipulation on the vertebral artery and cerebral blood flow found that while rotation did decrease blood flow in the vertebral artery, there was no change in cerebral blood flow, and therefore no evidence of an increase in the risk of cerebrovascular accidents. The crossover randomized controlled study included 20 participants and was the first of its kind to measure cerebral blood flow, vertebral artery blood flow and velocity in patients undergoing neck manipulation.
